Open Ocean Index

Quarterly market intelligence for the motor yacht and superyacht market.

Introduction

The Open Ocean Index is the quarterly market intelligence product of Open Ocean Group. It provides structured ask-price distributions, days-on-market, listing churn, and inventory data across the global motor yacht and superyacht market — published independently, under documented methodology, drawn from public-source data.

The Index exists because the motor yacht and superyacht market has, until now, lacked any independent published benchmark. Pricing visibility in this market has historically been held by brokers, who have every incentive to keep it private. The Index publishes what the market has not been able to see.

Coverage

Each quarterly briefing covers:

  • Ask price distributions, segmented by length, age, builder, and region

  • Days-on-market by segment

  • Listing churn and new-to-market activity

  • Ask price movements (reductions, withdrawals, re-listings)

  • Inventory volumes by segment over time

  • Regional activity signals across the Mediterranean, Americas, Northern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East

Methodology and independence

The Index is constructed from public-source data — broker listings, registry records, and other publicly accessible market information. It is not derived from any subscription database, MLS feed, or industry data source that restricts redistribution.

The Index is segmented across four size bands — 15-25m, 25-45m, 45-65m, and 65m and above — and reports medians, quartiles, and sample sizes for every published statistic. Segments with insufficient observations are disclosed as limited-sample rather than reported as point estimates.

The Index is published by Open Ocean Group, an independent advisory practice. The firm accepts no commissions, referral payments, or other consideration from any party in the yacht ownership ecosystem. The Index is not influenced by advisory engagements; information held under client confidentiality is not used in published reporting.

Full methodology is published here.
